Sensorial

Activities in this stage of the Montessori curriculum sharpen the child's five senses. Sensorial tasks teach the student how to distinguish concepts like colours, shapes, dimensions, taste, and scent. The materials in this segment are specifically designed to stimulate and refine the child’s intelligence.

Overall, the activities included target the child’s:

  • Visual (Sight)
  • Tactile (Touch)
  • Olfactory (Smell)
  • Gustatory (Taste)
  • Thermic (Temperature)
  • Baric (Weight)
  • Tactile-Muscular
  • Chromatic (Colour) Senses.

The lessons in this portion teach your child to differentiate between concepts and characteristics and to appreciate the world for its diversity.

Dr. Montessori stated that the senses are the doorway to the person’s mind. As such, sensorial activities can lead to intellectual growth, given that the sense organs are continuously developed in this curriculum. Future learning can become an easier task when the children can compare, classify, and organise various sensorial stimulants.

The information they gather from these activities helps enhance the learner's sense of perception and judgment. It's the starting point for mathematics and relevant concepts like measurement, the decimal system, and more. Sensorial is also the foundation of language, specifically in mastering nouns, adjectives, and comparison.
